Las Vegas is famous for its bright lights, lavish casinos, and high-energy entertainment, but just a short drive away, you can experience a completely different side of Nevada. For those looking to escape the glitz of the strip and immerse themselves in nature, the Wild West Horseback Adventure offers a memorable journey into the Southern Nevada desert. This unique experience combines horseback riding on a trail ride, stunning landscapes, and authentic Western activities to give you a taste of the Old West.
A Western Escape from the Las Vegas Strip
Just 45 minutes from the bustling Las Vegas Strip, we found ourselves at a serene ranch nestled in the Moaba Valley, ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure. As soon as we arrived, the contrast between the city and the wide-open desert landscape was striking.
Note that we drove to the corral ourselves as we were at the Valley of Fire State Park earlier in the day. Hotel pickup is available and is the typical option. Everyone else on our amazing experience was picked up at their Las Vegas Hotel. They ended up being great company on our horseback ride.
Our adventure began with a horseback ride through natural desert trails, heading into a canyon surrounded by stunning mountains, iconic Joshua trees, along with vegetation and brush everywhere in the canyon.
The ride was relaxing and scenic, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the desert as we took in the vast, rugged terrain. The highlight of our ride, however, came as we made our way back to the ranch—just in time to witness a spectacular sunset. The colors of the sky seemed to stretch endlessly, offering one of the most spectacular sunsets we’ve ever seen. Though cameras can capture a moment, this sunset was so vibrant, that no picture could truly do it justice.
Horseback Riding: A Journey Through Desert Trails
The Wild West Horseback Adventure offers a variety of options for riders, whether you’re a seasoned equestrian or a beginner. We were matched with a great horse that was well-trained and perfect for all riding levels. Leo, a professional wrangler at the ranch provided excellent guidance on how to properly use the bridle and control our horses, ensuring that everyone, regardless of experience, was able to enjoy the ride.
While well-behaved and gentle horses, they had an instinct to nibble on the greenery that lined the canyon trail. A gentle reminder was all it took to keep them moving forward.
As we rode deeper into the canyon, the beauty of the surrounding Nevada’s desert wilderness became even more apparent. We were surrounded by towering mountains, and the desert floor was alive with wildlife. Along the way, we spotted road runners, jack rabbits, and even a coyote in the nearby cattle pasture.
The real magic, however, came when we were on our return trip, where the sunset began to paint the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. The changing colors were mesmerizing, and every moment felt like a scene from an old Western movie.
Wild West Activities: Dinner, Lassoing, and Bull Riding
Once we returned to the ranch, our adventure continued with some fun, hands-on Western activities. First, we were treated to a hearty, authentic Western-style dinner. Our chef, Joe, prepared a delicious feast complete with steak, bread, and corn—perfect for refueling after our ride. The meal was simple but satisfying, hitting the spot after a day spent outdoors. The sunset dinners were great after a nice horseback riding adventure.
Next, we got a crash course in lassoing. Leo, one of the wranglers, gave us a lesson on how to throw a lasso over steer horns. Both of us gave it a try—Erin managed to lasso on her third attempt, while I got lucky and succeeded on my first try! The lassoing lesson was a lot of fun, and it was a great way to get a sense of what life on a ranch might have been like.
The final activity of the day was the chance to try bull riding. We didn’t have to worry about bucking bulls, but we did get to sit on a bull, complete with horns, while it grazed on some hay. It was a fun and lighthearted way to end our time at the ranch, and it gave us a small taste of the cowboy lifestyle.
The Sunset Ride: Why We Chose the Wild West Sunset Adventure
One of the best features of the Wild West Horseback Adventure is the option to choose between two rides: the **Morning Maverick Ride**, which includes a sunrise breakfast, and the Wild West Sunset Dinner Ride, which features dinner. We opted for the sunset ride and are so glad we did. The sunset over the desert was the highlight of the experience, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Watching the sun dip behind the mountains while on horseback in such a stunning setting was a moment we’ll never forget.
For those looking to make the most of their time in the desert, this ride offers a combination of natural beauty and adventure that’s hard to beat.
