Erin and I set out to explore the New Braunfels Main Plaza and the Historic District of New Braunfels to see the beautiful historical buildings and murals. In the process, we came upon the mural below and thought, “How cool”. After getting some great pictures, we decided to continue to the other side of the building. Here, we discovered Krause’s Cafe and Biergarten, and so glad that we did!!.
The Krause’s Café and Biergarten was a lot of fun. You have a choice of nearly 100 local, regional, and international beers on draft. There is a choice to sit inside in the café area if hungry, and in the air conditioning to drink a beer or other beverage. You also have the choice to go and sit outside while listening to live German music. That was fun and got a chance to rest our legs and wet our whistle. I’d rank this a 5 out of 5 for being able to just enjoy your friends and family in a festive atmosphere that was so much fun!!
The Biergarten was a great site to rest our feet and enjoy a beverage (or two) while listening to live German music.
We knew we had to check this place out and we did!
What is the History of Krause’s Café and Biergarten?
Krause’s Café and Biergarten is an establishment in downtown New Braunfels that caters to people wanting to have fun through eating, drinking, hanging out, and/or listening to live music. This business exudes its German Heritage through the layout and theme of the facilities along with the extensive mural of Krause family members and the sausage recipe posted on Krause’s external walls.
The eatery was established back in the late 1930s with a husband-wife team, Kermit and Mildred Krause. The establishment enjoyed success for nearly 60 years but eventually was forced to shut down in the late 90’s due to a decline in business. The property was restarted several times as an eatery but was unsuccessful.
Developer Ron Snider bought the vacant establishment in 2002 and eventually started remodeling the place in 2014. The New Version of Krause’s Café was launched in December 2016. The more successful and busy part of the business was the massive beer hall and garden, both featuring stages where bands often played. The Beer Hall, at 4,000 square feet, is modeled after the Hofbräuhaus Beer Hall in Munich.
Where is Krause’s Café and Biergarten?
Krause’s Café and Biergarten is located at 148 S. Castell street. It is next door to the New Braunfels Farmers Market and a short walk from the Faust Hotel (0.3 miles) or the New Braunfels Main Plaza.
Krause’s Mural
Krause’s mural is called the “Spass und Gemütlichkeit”. It pays homage to the historic nature and celebration of German culture life that the Krause’s Cafe and Biergarten has provided throughout the years in New Braunfels. Brent McCarthy, a local artist, completed this mural masterpiece in April 2007.

This place was an absolute blast and perfect timing as we had been exploring and needed a little snack and a beverage.
