Pedernales Falls State Park is a great place to visit and take pictures of the natural beauty while out exploring the Texas Hill Country. Located just east of the historic Texas Hill Country Towns of Johnson City and Fredericksburg, guests can visit the sprawling Pedernales Falls State Park.
From the map below, you can see that we drove to Pedernales Falls State Park from our rental in Dripping Springs.
The park includes over 5,200 acres of recreational space, the centerpiece of which is the Pedernales River itself. For 50 years and counting, people visiting this park, referred to as Pedernales Falls Park, or simply just per Pedernales Falls, has provided a getaway for those seeking adventure on the water, hikers, nature lovers, and more.
The Pedernales River runs from west to east through the northern parts of the Texas Hill country. Its course runs for just over a hundred miles and it earned its name from Spanish conquistadors who visited the region. The Pedernales Riverbed attracted human settlement back in history, before it even had a name.
Now, let’s take a look at some of my beautiful and breathtaking pictures of the Pedernales Falls State Park:
Overview Pictures
Turn into the park and drive a few miles to where you get to the parking area for the falls. Walk down the trail for a reasonably short distance and arrive as this breathtaking overlook area.
Waterfall Pictures
Proceed down from the overview to the actual Pedernales river and falls area. Texas Hill Country has been in a drought for a while so the water wasn’t too high but the falls were distinct. Take a look at this natural beauty!
Standing on Ridges Pictures
There were a number of rock ridges that arose and went across the riverbed. These pictures where from on top of these ridges.
Holes/Cracks in Ridges
Also, on top of the ridges, were various holes and cracks in the rock that really makes you wonder just how powerful the water can be. The water level was low due to the drought. I really would love to see what the falls looks like after a big storm. I imagine the river would really be moving!!
Pool Pictures
Pools of crystal clear water were sitting between the various rock ridges. The water was pouring over the pools down each set of ridges that created waterfalls! Look at just how clear the water is.\!
Heading Out
I highly recommend going to see this area in person as pictures and video just doesn’t fully convey the real beauty that you see here. We visited the park during a prolonged drought, so I can’t even begin to imagine how rough the water can be as the river rises. We did have some falls streaming down that were not super intense, but, just thinking about the way the paths where the water’s running and sculpting the rock is just amazing.
