A Historic Transformation: From Coal Hill to Lush Parkland
In the mid-1700s, Mount Washington, which is now home to Emerald View Park, was extensively mined for its high-quality coal. During this time, the area was known as Coal Hill, reflecting its significant role in early American industry. Coal Hill, now Mount Washington, was the site of the first bituminous coal mining in Pennsylvania in 1762.
Originally known as Mount Washington Grandview Park, this area has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s when it served as a popular spot for sightseeing and leisure activities.
Over the centuries, efforts have been made to remediate and reforest the 257-acre hillside and park, transforming it into the beautiful and ecologically diverse space it is today. In the late 2000s, the grassroots effort revitalized and expanded the park, transforming it into Emerald View Park. This created a park with a sprawling green space that preserves the area’s natural beauty and historical significance from the Grand View Scenic Byway, and three historic park spaces: Grandview Park, Olympia Park, and the Mount Washington Park.

Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy
A group of citizens formed the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in 1996. They came together with a common goal to return Pittsburgh’s city parks back to their former glory. The parks have seen a remarkable transformation with the help of many dedicated volunteers. The Conservancy works closely with the City of Pittsburgh as an official public-private partnership agreement.
There are several regional parks managed by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, including the Emerald View Park. It also includes:
- Frick Park: A 644-acre regional park east of downtown Pittsburgh. It is Pittsburgh’s largest park, known for its trails, woodlands, and natural beauty. It also has a basketball court.
- Highland Park: This 377-acre park in Pittsburgh is one of Pittsburgh’s most popular regional parks. It is home to Pittsburgh’s drinking water reservoir, the Pittsburgh Zoo, and the PPG Aquarium. It is located Northeast of downtown Pittsburgh, still on the south side of the Allegheny River.
- Riverview Park: The 259-acre park was created in 1894. This occurred earlier than the City of Allegheny’s annexation to the city of Pittsburgh. The park is known for its rustic woodland trails and steep topography.
- Schenley Park: The 456-acre park is located north of downtown Pittsburgh across the Allegheny River to the north side area. The park was established in 1889 from farmland that was donated by Mary Schenley. It contains plenty of trails, woods, and other attractions, such as the Phipps Conservatory.
