Highlights of the Area

The Dome Summit

The Dome Summit is the park’s main attraction. Taking the Loop Trail to the Summit Trail and then to the top of the dome, at 425 feet above the surrounding land, offers a breathtaking view.  Take the Loop Trail to the Summit Trail.   You will walk up the Summit Trail to get to the top.  You get an amazing view of Fredericksburg in the distance.  The Summit Trail is considered a moderately difficult trail.  It’s truly an accomplishment to summit the dome.

Vernal Pools

Indentations in the rock at the top serve as seasonal vernal pools. These pools allow some plants to get a foothold and remain in the pools year-round. 

Sunset Rock – Scenic Viewing Area

A set of rocks on the northwest side of the park provides a perfect setting to capture incredible views of the sun setting in the distance below the horizon.

Native American Legends and Folklore

Enchanted Rock is special in Indigenous Peoples folklore, with legends of magical spirits and mystical powers surrounding this imposing granite dome.  According to some beliefs, the sacred site emits a mysterious sound when the wind blows through its crevices, adding to its mystical allure.  Native American tribes, like the Lipan Apaches, Comanches, and Tonkawas,  believe spirits haunt the dome and can cast spells on intruders.

The park is a national natural landmark.  It is also on the National Register of Historic Places as an archaeological district.  The park has over 400 distinct archaeological sites on its grounds.  These archeological findings include bedrock mortars, remnants of ancient food processing, and evidence of human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. The State of Texas has 120 sites designated as State Archeological Landmarks.

Park Headquarters/Entrance

The address for the Park Headquarters and entrance to the park is 16710 Ranch Rd 965, Fredericksburg, TX.  This is the location where you check in to the park.  You can also pick up route maps for rock climbing from the Park Ranger and purchase items from the Park Store, including wood for campfires.

Note: Advanced reservations, which can be made online, are required during busy times of the year. March is the busiest time of the year for the park.

Best Times to Visit

To make the most of your visit to Enchanted Rock, consider arriving early in the morning or during weekdays to avoid crowds. The cooler months of fall and spring offer pleasant weather for hiking, while summer can be scorching. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan accordingly.  You don’t want to be at the top of Enchanted Rock with inclement weather closing in.

Where is it Located?

The park is located in the Texas Hill Country, between Gillespie and Llano counties. It is found about 97 miles west of Austin and 87 miles north-northwest of San Antonio.  The park is 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965.  This is a picturesque drive with amazing views of the hill country on the way to the park.

Preserving the Natural Beauty of Enchanted Rock

Conservation Efforts and Sustainability Practices

In 1978, the Nature Conservancy purchased the area now known as the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area from Charles Moss. The park opened as a state natural area in October 1978. The Nature Conservancy then sold the property to the Texas State Parks and Wildlife Department in 1984.

As a cherished landmark, Enchanted Rock is protected through conservation efforts to preserve its ecological integrity and scenic beauty. Visitors are encouraged and expected to practice “Leave No Trace” principles by minimizing their environmental impact and respecting wildlife habitats. 

Expansion of the Park

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recently purchased an additional 3673 acres to expand the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.  The purchase more than doubled the size of the area and cost $43 million.  Funding came from the Texas Centennial Parks Conservation Fund.  The Texas State Legislature established the Fund to address the growing number of visitors to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and other Texas parks, and to ensure their conservation for decades.to come.
